Course Overview

Interviewing and counselling are concerned with client stories. Those in the helping profession hear different stories — tales of depression and abuse, anger or grief, and sometimes even narratives of strength and courage. The interviewer’s task is therefore to listen carefully to the clients’ stories and learn how they think, feel, and act as they do. At times, simply listening carefully and empathically is enough to produce meaningful change.

Listen, with intention, with love, with the “ear of the heart.” Listen not only cerebrally with the intellect, but with the whole of feelings, our emotions, imaginations, and ourselves. Esther de Waal

Objectives

Microskills are the foundation of intentional interviewing. They are communication skill units of the interview that provide specific alternatives for interviewers to use with many types of clients and all theories of counselling and therapy. At an intentional level of competence, trainees may aim to accomplish the following in this module:

• Be skilled in the use of basic listening sequence, enabling the client to tell the story. In addition, draw out key facts and feelings related to client issues.
• Observe clients’ reactions to your skill usage and modify your skills and
attending behaviours to complement clients’ uniqueness.
• Conduct a complete interview using only listening and observation skills.

Topics

• Multicultural Competence
• Attending Behaviour
• Open And Closed Questions
• Observation Skills
• Encouraging, Paraphrasing And Summarizing
• Reflection Of Feeling (Empathy, Basic Listening Sequence)
• Reflection Of Meaning
• The 5-Stage Interview Structure

Training Methodology

Our training methodology facilitates trainees to learn the skills sequentially and systemically. Each skill is taught, practiced and debriefed in the process of training. The training format also encourages trainees to develop self-awareness and to reflect on how they use the skills while they function in interpersonal situations. This facilitates the formation of the trainees, that is to develop the appropriate values and behaviours that reflect these values.

DIDACTIC INSTRUCTION
Focuses on the definition of the skills and their functions: when and how to use the skill. Through group interaction trainees are encouraged to reflect on their use and practice of the skill.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Social workers, counsellors, human resource personnel, church pastoral workers, volunteers, caregivers & those interested in communication & interpersonal skills.

Certificate of Completion

Trainees are expected to attend 75% of the course schedule to receive the “Certificate of Completion.”
